Abstract
Accompanied by the frontloading efforts in product development, toler-ancing becomes more and more important in early design stages. Motivated by the lack of methods for early phases of the design process, three ap-proaches for considering tolerances in conceptual and preliminary design stages are presented in this paper. The first allows assessing the robustness of concepts with the help of a tolerance-specific FMEA. A subsequent method enables a tolerance specification and analysis based on a graphical visualiza-tion of the product structure. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis for skeleton models is presented. By using these methods the design and tolerancing pro-cess runs simultaneously. Hence, a robust design and reliable tolerances al-ready exist at the beginning of the detail design.
