Fundamental changes of functional requirements for vehicles affect different aspects of the development including the exterior design. Therefore, the recognition of main design characteristics becomes a major challenge during the design process and requires an early coordination of design and technology. Based on this challenge, this contribution is aiming at supporting the multidisciplinary collaboration in order to detect and handle potential conflicts between form and function. We introduce an approach to formalise the design DNA by identifying characteristic from elements and their relationships. The result is a methodology to formulate the design DNA of vehicles based on the model of nature. Part of the methodology is a tool for the quantitative description of the form aesthetics and the systematic development of the characteristic design language of vehicle generations.
