Abstract

The interest in the use of renewable resources (RRs) increases, especially in the automotive industry. Due to the high density-related strength of natural fibres (NF), lightweight constructions can be realized by RRs. In the car development process it is essential that all components are compatible with CAE methods. For glass fibre-reinforced polymers models have been well investigated. However, data for the simulation of NF-reinforced composites are essentially non-existent. Therefore different natural fibres were characterized according to their mechanical and morphological properties and the orientation was determined in injection moulded samples. The experimentally determined properties were used as input for the simulation. The simulative results could be confirmed by the experiments.
