Abstract
The computer-aided configuration of technical systems is a powerful tool for companies to reduce the time to market by an automatisation of subtasks of the design process. Compared to the expert systems of the 1980s in the context of parametric design today configuration can be used to vary subsections of the product design. In this paper the "Generative Design Approach" is presented with regard to the configuration of technical systems. In the context of this approach the design of a product is divided in sub design areas. Different design variants of such a section are modelled by parametric sub models and stored in a library. The configuration model of the product is assembled and varied by this design elements. The approach is illustrated instancing a bridge crane.
